Illustration

Illustration is a course that will utilize traditional media and techniques while conveying a message or telling a story. Students will study examples of a visual narrative from traditional Illustration to present day examples. Students will also learn and develop storytelling skills, which is a vital aspect of illustrating. Students will develop conceptual strategies, take risks, try new ideas and explore non-literal thinking giving form to abstract ideas. Student projects will range from: editorial illustration, book illustration, commercial assignments, spot illustrations, and book covers.

Supplies

  • Sketchbook (video here)
    • nothing smaller than 8"x5" no larger than 9"x12".
    • Sketchbook should NOT say "SKETCH/60 LB. Paper"--that paper is too light. Look for "DRAWING/70 LB. Paper" or "MIXED MEDIA/90 LB.+ Paper".
      • Spiral Bound is good
      • Perfect Bound is good
      • NO NO NO TAPE BOUND (the pages fall out)
  • drawing pencils (at least 4 different hardnesses)
    • For example: 2H, HB, 2B, 4B or 3H, HB, 4B, 6B
    • Sets are not required, but could be split between 2 students.
    • this is a GREAT SET!
    • Individual Pencils are an option. These are sold at Michael's or Rochester Art Supply.
  • kneaded eraser
    • Faber Castell
    • Prismacolor
    • General's

Supplies (not required but encouraged)

  • Inking tools. Not all of these, these are just ideas!
    • Micron Pens
      • Any ink pen will do, but waterproof and pigmented ink is a must
    • Pentel Brush Pens
      • This pen creates a "brush-like line" that gives character and attitude to ink work. A favorite of Inktober artists like Jake Parker.
    • Colored Markers
      • Like Prismacolors, Faber Castell PITT Pens, or Copics. These can get expensive to please invest if you are REALLY going to use them!!!
